The editor of The Upstream Journal is Derek MacCuish.
In 1992 he was hired by the Social Justice Committee of Montreal (later known as Social Justice Connection) as a part-time employee to edit the Upstream Journal
In the mid-1990s he became a full-time employee, and took on the role of director of advocacy for the organization and as a lead voice in the campaign to cancel Third World debt. Canada became the first nation of the G7 to cancel that debt, in 2000.
After 2000, he was the main campaigner from Canada engaged in global campaigns to build accountability and social responsibility in the largest international financial institutions, the World Bank and IMF. In the years following, he was engaged in the efforts – mostly successful – with other international partners to establish an independent office to evaluate the impact of IMF programs, the World Bank engagement in reducing the post-war debt of Liberia, and the redrafting of the World Bank’s policy on social responsibility to better identify human rights discrimination..
As adjunct professor at Concordia University Dept. of Political Science from 1999 to 2006, he taught seminars on global governance and a class on international human rights.
He became executive director of Social Justice Connection in 2000, a position he held until stepping down in October, 2020 while continuing as editor of the magazine. In July, 2021, both he and the Upstream Journal became fully independent of the organization.
